Group HistoryThe Joint chapters of Gamma Kappa (KKY) and Alpha Chi (TBS) pride ourselves on working together to most effectively serve the band program at Northern Arizona University. Together, we serve all of NAU's bands: Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Symphony, Collegiate Band, Jazz Band, etc, by hosting receptions after concerts, helping to cover the bands' financial needs, helping uniform and instrument check out and check in for Marching Band, and by being at rehearsals to help our directors run them smoothly and efficiently. As joint chapters, we also plan band camp activities, plan and execute NAU's annual Band Banquet, host joint rush events for our prospective members, hold joint fundraisers, and hold monthly joint chapter meetings. It is also a tradition for the joint chapters to sing our joint hymn after every joint meeting and event. Collectively we work under our slogan "Music at it's Peak" to provide exceptional service to the bands of our school. Gamma Kappa chapter mascot: The Steller's Jay, beautiful in it’s rich blue and black feathers, is a bird native to Flagstaff. Hitting close to home, Gamma Kappa has collectively decided that this bird fits extremely well as our mascot. He arrived in the mail mid–semester and we’ve proudly named him “AH!” His name originates from the “For Music Sake” Western District Convention in 2007 when all of Gamma Kappa annoyed their brother chapters around them be replying “AH!” after almost every motion passed, and pretty much whenever we felt it was appropriate…so...all the time. He is new to our chapter this semester (Fall 2007) and we’ve grown quite fond of him. Alpha Chi chapter mascot: Our chapter's mascot is a white tiger named Chi. She was adopted by the chapter in the Fall of 2003, and she was initiated with the Alpha Chi class. Our favorite thing about our mascot is what we call the Chi Award. Every week, at our chapter meetings, members have the opportunity to nominate other members for this award; it is basically a "sister of the week" type award. The winner gets to take Chi home until the next chapter meeting, when she will be given to the next winner of the Chi award. At the end of the Spring semester, we choose a sister of the year, and that sister gets to take Chi home with her or him for the summer. Now-a-days Chi sports a blue bandana with "Relay for Life" on it in gold that was donated to her by one of our members from the 2006 relay for Life at the NAU Skydome. |
